EA Sports smashes revenue records with the help of FIFA 22
FIFA 22 proved to be yet another successful instalment of the football game franchise, and EA Sports recorded the numbers to back it up!
From the first of April 2022, through to the 30th of June 2022, EA Sports recorded revenue of $1.77 billion. That represents a 14% increase on revenue recorded at the same time last year, and further compounded the incredible launch of the game, with 9 million copies being sold by December.
The importance of FUT
Of course, one of Electronic Arts’ most lucrative incomes is its Ultimate Team game modes across the FIFA, Madden and NHL titles. The fact that we all have a shocking case of “shiny new thing” syndrome each time they bring out a new promo, means that in the 2021 financial year, EA recorded $1.6 billion in revenue just from Ultimate Team alone.
That specific number drew a lot of attention when the report was initially released, and due to the heat surrounding EA and their ‘loot boxes’, they decided not to publish Ultimate Team earnings in their 2022 or 2023 reports. But, it’s probably not wrong to assume that Ultimate Team was the driving force behind EA’s recent revenue increase.
The end of a successful chapter
The dust has long since settled on the shocking split between FIFA and EA Sports, and we all know that come next September, we’ll be loading up EA Sports FC instead of FIFA 24. However, it’s still hard to imagine how well either company will cope with the loss of a brand which generated $20 billion in sales over the past two decades. But with that said, we are definitely looking forward to the new ideas EA will need to bring to the table to keep interest red hot throughout the enormous rebrand!
