FIFA 22: META Player Picks for the Upcoming Ultimate Team
FIFA has an ever-evolving META – or ‘most effective tactic available’ for those who don’t speak gamer. When the release of FIFA 22 comes around, we’ll all have to wave goodbye to the META, as certain aspects of the game will be nerfed (made less effective) whilst others are buffed (you guessed it – more effective).
This year has been all about pace and those quick/long/impossible through balls in behind the defence. For that reason, pacey forwards and quick defenders topped the charts when it comes to price and popularity. Those same players appear in almost every team – for a long time it was a real rarity to face a team without Varane and Mendy.
But, going into FIFA 22 the key traits needed in a player will likely change. So, if the current META players aren’t going to be the best in the upcoming game, then who will it be?
At the beginning of FIFA 21, Nick Pope was almost a guaranteed starter in any FIFA hopeful’s team, but when FIFA 22 arrives it’s likely that this trend will not continue. So, if not Pope, then who?
We think it is impossible to ignore the season that Emiliano Martinez is having – the Aston Villa keeper has kept 14 clean sheets in 34 games and has made 123 saves this season. Surely then, he will be due an upgrade from his current 78 OVR FIFA 21 base card – after all, he has received an 84 IF in Ultimate Team. If Martinez receives a low/mid 80s base rating then we believe that he will be an ideal choice for those starting out in FIFA 22 Ultimate Team.
As we’ve already mentioned, Varane has become synonymous with unbreakable defences in FIFA 21. His pace, body type and height has meant that he is more than a solid option for those looking to add some serious quality to their team. Next year, if pace continues to be a deciding factor in games, we think that Fikayo Tomori could be a great addition to your budding Ultimate Team.
The English loanee centre-half has been perfecting his game at AC Milan this season and he has impressed the Italian club so much so that they want to make his loan deal permanent. Therefore, we expect to see his 76 rating increase to somewhere around the 80 mark in FIFA 22, making him an ideal purchase for the early days of the game as you find your feet.
Jesse Lingard. It was never going to be anyone else, was it? Lingardinho looks to have found his form again and is making the most of his prime years. So far this season, Lingard has 9 goals and 4 assists in 16 appearances. This has seen the 28 year old receive 2 in-forms in FIFA 21 – we fully expect his base card to receive a considerable boost from his base 77.
Provided Lingard’s card receives a much deserved revamp, we believe he would make him an ideal candidate to bridge the gap between your midfield and your attack.
For the cheap attacker on our list, we thought we’d go for Calvert-Lewin. The 24 year old is now a regular on the Everton team sheet and looks like he could play a pivotal role in England’s Euros campaign this summer. With 21 goals and 4 assists in 35 appearances this season, it’s likely that the Sheffield-born Evertonian will receive a much better card than his current 79 OVR.
With good pace, height and aerial ability, Dominic Calvert-Lewin will provide the cornerstone from which your attack can grow throughout FIFA 22. At least until Christmas.
