New FIFA 22 cards: Are Heroes Coming to the Game?!

EA first introduced Icons to Ultimate Team back in FIFA 16: they were exclusive to Xbox and they were called “Legends”. Since then, Icons have developed into some of the most sought after cards in the game, but as we all know, they are incredibly rare and most of us will go a lifetime without packing Prime Pelé. But now, it looks like there will be a new type of card in FIFA that bridges the gap between your squad and the ultra rare Icons…

Introducing Heroes

Lots of FIFA accounts are reporting that “Heroes” will be a new addition in FIFA 22 Ultimate Team. The special cards will be awarded to players who had brilliant spells for their clubs, but have previously missed out on Icon cards as the EA Sports gods decided that they never reached that world-class level (how sad for them). The full list of suspected Heroes is here:

Joe Cole

There’s no denying Joe Cole’s talent – coming up through the West Ham youth teams, fans of many Premier League clubs heard the rumours about the London wonderkid who was destined for greatness. Cole did make good on that potential; he won seven trophies at Chelsea and was recognised as one of England’s most skillful ballers.

But, the general agreement is that Joe Cole could have been 10x the player he was had his career not been stalled by constant injuries. That’s why we think Joe Cole is the ideal Hero card – he’s the perfect example of a top player who created great memories for his club’s fanbase but never quite reached the hall of fame –  and for that, he should be acknowledged in FIFA 22!

Ole Gunnar Solskjær

One rumoured Hero card which will no doubt delight Man United fans is Solskjær. The Norwegian striker earned a reputation for coming off the bench and scoring match-winning goals – we refuse to mention a certain night in 1999. Solskjær stayed with United for a total of nine years and in that time became a fan favourite, before eventually having to retire due to a persistent knee injury.

Once again, Ole is another perfect example of a Hero card; he may not have been one of the best in the world, but his goals still earned him a place in fan folklore during the years of United dominance.

Jerzy Dudek

Next is Dudek, a man who rivals Solskjær in the competition for greatest Champions League moment of all time; the Pole’s save from Shevchenko in the 2005 final was voted number one in a UEFA poll – but  we think his Grobelaar-inspired spaghetti legs were pretty good too. Let’s get it straight, Dudek was never icon level, but he is rightly regarded as a Liverpool legend and deserving of a FIFA 22 Heroes card!

Jürgen Kohler

This guy deserves a Hero card just for his mustache, nevermind his incredible playing career. Kohler played exactly 500 club career games and in that time he won both the German and Italian league titles as well as the Champions League and UEFA Cup. On top of his club winner’s medals, the German centre-back also won the World Cup and Euro ‘96 (we’ve come this far without saying it’s coming home, so we won’t).

Honestly, we think a Hero card might be underselling Kohler a little bit here, he could probably mix it at icon level. But, Kohler has cut an unassuming figure since retirement and that probably explains why he isn’t a world-renowned defender (and more importantly why he’s only a Hero!).
