FIFA 22 Tips: meta moves to get more wins
The game is only a few days old, but between early access and EA Play, the FIFA pros have spent hours on FIFA 22 Ultimate Team figuring out the meta already. So, we’ve got some simple tips you can use to bring your game to the next level, without having to practise for hours on end like the pro players!
And if you don’t play FUT, there’s no need to worry! You can put these moves to good use in pro clubs, just as much as you can in division rivals and squad battles.
Except for… shot cancel!
What with EA Sports’ newfound love for AI blocks, the shot cancel was an OP skill move at the start of FIFA 21, and it is back! The animation is quicker and harder to predict than the standard fake shot, so you can use it to surprise your opponent and break the defensive line.
The thing to remember is that you need to exit the move in a chosen direction. If you’re moving to the left, the most effective way is to exit the move to the right. The change in direction comes so quickly that it’s very hard to stop.
Bring the physical
Over the next year, you’re going to get to know that left trigger really well. Strength is back this FIFA, with players like Haaland and Lukaku bringing some serious muscle to the party. If you can put your body between the ball and the defender, you can turn and face the goal while shrugging off any challenges.
As the ball arrives, make sure you’re holding the left trigger. If you want to shield the ball while moving, use the left stick to guide the way. If you want to quickly face the goal, just press the trigger without moving the left stick and you’ll turn and face.
Feel the finesse
This one’s nice and easy: finesse shots from distance are seriously OP this year. When you get closer to the goal, keepers save them more consistently, but if you can get it right from the edge of the box it’s a great way to bang in the goals.
Work the ball on the edge of the box until you have a player facing the far corner at a 45 degree angle. Load up the shot with plenty of power and watch as it soars into the far corner. Players with the finesse shot trait will be even more deadly, so look out for them.
Double tap that
We don’t expect this one to live long past the first patch, but it’s worth getting to grips with it anyway! The lobbed through ball (L1/LB + triangle/Y) works really well on FIFA 22, but there’s a way to make it even more effective.
If you double tap the triangle, the lobbed through ball should come through with perfect weight for your onrushing player. Wait until you’ve got a runner with some space ahead of them, and deploy the pass. Double tap the triangle/Y button, and try to time the second tap as close as you can to when the player strikes the ball. You’ll start opening up defences with ease.
Need more speed?
There has been a lot of chatter about the speed boost, with lots of differing opinions on how to use it in the most effective way. From what we understand, FIFA 22 really rewards smart use of the sprint button. The last thing you want to do is run around holding it the entire time.
When an opposition player approaches the ball carrier, make sure you’re running on a straight line and press the sprint button just as they begin to make their approach for a tackle. Your player will burst past them with an Iniesta-style boost of speed and you’ll be bearing down on goal in no time. The timing is crucial, so be prepared to get it wrong a few times before you can master it.
