TOTY Leak: who made the cut? Spoilers included

The FUT 22 Team of the Year squad has been leaked: we get a TOTY Mbappe, but Salah is left out. KDB and Jorginho are in, plus lots of meta options. Credit to Twitter account @FUTSherriff for the info.

We all knew the leak was coming, but this squad is still full of surprises! The votes are in and the people have picked the final team: no Salah (you have to think he’ll be the 12th player) no Trent, no Barella – KDB and Jorginho make the cut, and Messi, Mbappe and Lewy lead the line. Check out the TOTY Leak to see which of your TOTY nominees made the team:

Pick the bones out of that! After being snubbed for the Ballon d’Or earlier this season, the Egyptian King takes another L by missing out on the FIFA 22 TOTY (we’re sure he’s devastated). There’s no place for Trent Alexander-Arnold either, leaving Liverpool fans with little to celebrate.

The big guns

So, we’ll start with the front three: Lionel Messi is in, as is his PSG teammate Kylian Mbappé. Both have had good years, Mess won the Copa America and Mbappe banged in goals for PSG – but you have to think people just want them to have TOTY cards. Robert Lewandowski is deservedly included after smashing all kinds of records in the last 12 months. It can’t come as a huge shock to anyone that Cristiano Ronaldo, a mainstay of previous years, misses out.

Midfield maestros

There was a lot of debate about Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne, but he has been selected in midfield alongside N’Golo Kante. The Frenchman was never in doubt, after basically winning the Champions League on his own. But, the big story in midfield is the double European Champion (and slowest pro footballer of all time) – Jorginho. Despite not being a popular card in FUT, he makes the team and gives us at least one wildcard TOTY item.

Four rocks at the back

At the back, there are few surprises, with a double act from Man City and PSG. Marquinhos and Hakimi form the French half of this brick wall, with Ruben Dias and Cancelo providing a title-winning CB and LB. You do not want to come up against these guys. Donnaruma, the penalty-saving reincarnation of Buffon, lines up between the sticks.

Let’s talk upgrades

Last season, the TOTY upgrades were a little disappointing. With no 99s, we saw top cards getting a small upgrade – rather than the super juiced versions we saw in previous TOTYs. We’re praying for at least one 99 up front and in midfield, but maybe not at the back. We all want to be able to score goals after all.

At a quick guess, for the top ratings we’re thinking:

  • 99 Lewandowski
  • 98 Messi
  • 96 Mbappe
  • 95 Jorginho (please juice his pace, EA)
  • 94 De Bruyne

Who’s your 12th man?

With lots of big names missing out, speculation will now turn to the 12th man. For us, Salah leads the charge, but you can’t discount CR7 and Karim Benzema probably deserves some recognition too. Lots of fans are upset to see Joshua Kimmich left out for Jorginho, so we can expect to see support for him too.

Last season, EA Sports released a shortlist of three nominees during TOTY, and we can expect the same again this time around. We can also expect an honourable mention item (let’s hope they do better than Sabitzer in FIFA 21) for the TOTY squad building challenge. Alongside the traditional market crash and the hype that always comes with this promo, we’re in for an exciting few weeks on FUT.

Fans have their say

It’s fair to say that the selections have split the room. Jorginho’s coming in for a lot of stick; but we’re going to play Devil’s advocate. After a terrible first season for Chelsea, where he became the target for fans to vent their Sarri-ball frustrations, he looked finished at Chelsea.

They tried to sell him to Arsenal and he refused to go. He sat on the bench and waited for a chance, took it and then never looked back. He survived the Lampard era, and made himself essential to the Tuchel system. He won the Champions League with a team that looked buried at Christmas and led his national side to a European Championship title, all while barely leaving the centre circle. It’s a pretty amazing story.

If there’s one thing everyone can agree with on FIFA Twitter, it’s that the PSG links look frightening. This one’s a bit worst case scenario, you’ll probably need 10m coins to buy the TOTY versions of these three, but still you get the point. You do not want to line up against those guys in Ultimate Team.

A PSA from Stakester

TOTY drops at 6pm on Friday January 21st, so make sure you have some packs saved and get ready for disappointment! Remember, the pack weights are low so you are unlikely to get one: do not get frustrated and buy FIFA Points or waste your coins. It just isn’t worth it.
