The best how-to for one of the most underappreciated skills in the game!

Rocket League is one of those games that sets apart those with skills and those without. In particular, Rocket League’s flip mechanics have long been a frustration for many players looking to improve their defending – sure, we’re all able to flip our cars, but not always at the right moment. If that’s you, don’t worry, we’ve got you. With these new tips and tricks, you might finally be able to execute a perfect half flip in the game and climb the competitive ranks!

What is a half flip in Rocket League?

A half flip is a manoeuvre in Rocket League that is by far the most effective way to perform a 180. Instead of keeping your car’s nose down and driving in the same line, you’re able to quickly flip it up so that you pivot and speed away in a new direction (backwards to where you were originally facing).

It’s especially useful when you need to track back towards your own goal. It’s worth mentioning that in the early days when you’re perfecting this move, a half flip doesn’t always result in a 180 turn. However, it’s much better to try this than attempting a clunky U-turn – and there’s no downside to giving it a go, don’t worry, you won’t be losing your precious boost!

The Basics of the Half Flip in Rocket League

The Half Flip isn’t often classified as a top tier skill in Rocket League, but we couldn’t disagree more! Although it isn’t the most effective move when attacking or going forward in a game, it can definitely come in clutch when defending. We all love Rocket League for its end-to-end action, but that means you need to be on your toes (tyres) when you’re playing – if you can’t switch from attacking to defensive play in a split second, then you’ll soon start shipping goals.

The Half Flip mechanic helps combat that; by initiating a backflip and stopping halfway through, you can quickly add an air roll (left or right) and then you’ll find yourself pointing towards your own goal, ready to put a stop to your opponent’s build-up.

Step by step Half Flip guide in Rocket League

The Half Flip is a simple move in comparison to some other Rocket League skills, but as with most things, it still takes time to master, and you might find your own variation. An easy way to learn the half flip is:

  1. Begin by backflipping and landing on the hood of your car.
  2. Once you’re comfortable with this action, begin to add in air rolls to the left or right.
  3. Practise until you can land comfortably on your tires.
  4. Experiment with adding boost to the manoeuvre.

Bonus tip: if you’re struggling, you can remove the need to initiate a backflip by driving at speed into the net so that you fly out upside down – this will give you the chance to focus on the air roll.

The controls:

  1. Initiate the jump using X/A
  2. Pull back on the left analogue stick
  3. Air roll by pressing L2/LT

If you prefer, you can change the layout of your controls – although we recommend always keeping your air roll on the bumpers or triggers!

What’s better – Half Flip in Rocket League with mouse and keyboard, or controller?

There is no definitive answer when it comes to the best way to play Rocket League. Some people prefer to use a mouse and keyboard, while others find that using a controller gives them a better gaming experience. Ultimately, it comes down to personal preference. Some people find that they are more accurate when using a mouse and keyboard, while others find that they have more control over their car when using a controller.

Why is my Half Flip in Rocket League not working?

If your Half Flip in Rocket League isn’t working, it may be due to a controller mapping issue. So when using a controller, it is recommended that you customise your controls!
