Modo Casino Outage Blamed on AWS Failure, Not Cyberattack
Operator Confirms No Breach or Player Data Risk in 13-Hour Disruption

Modo Casino confirmed Monday that a major site outage was due to a technical failure within Amazon Web Services (AWS)—not a cyberattack.
The incident began around 3 a.m. ET and lasted until approximately 4 p.m., leaving users locked out for most of the day. While concerns mounted about potential hacking, Modo Casino was quick to reassure users via email that no personal data or security systems were compromised.
“This global issue affected many companies, including Amazon’s own services,” the casino wrote.
“Please note: the outage was not caused by a cyberattack and did not pose any security risk to Modo Casino or any other affected companies.”
A Facebook post echoed the sentiment, thanking users for their patience and confirming that services have since been fully restored. Support inquiries were directed to [email protected].
Why It Matters: A Sector on Edge
Cyberattacks have hit the online and land-based casino industry hard in recent years. The Modo incident arrives as operators remain on high alert, following several major breaches:
-
Boyd Gaming disclosed a September 2025 cyberattack involving stolen employee and individual data. A former employee has since filed a lawsuit.
-
Bragg Gaming Group suffered an internal breach in August, though no customer data was exposed.
-
Flutter Entertainment confirmed a July breach affecting Paddy Power and Betfair, leaking usernames and partial addresses.
And it’s not just digital-first operators feeling the heat.
Tribal and Brick-and-Mortar Targets Rising
In April, Jackpot Junction Casino in Minnesota was crippled for over a week due to a cyberattack. Even Merkur Gaming and the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe’s Kewadin Casinos were victims of ransomware and data leaks in 2025.
The group RansomHub took credit for the February attack on Kewadin, claiming theft of over 500,000 files and accusing tribal leaders of ignoring warnings.
With rising ransomware tactics and social engineering targeting tribal gaming systems, even secure platforms are under pressure to maintain trust and uptime.
Modo’s Response: Swift, Transparent
Though unrelated to these threats, Modo’s AWS-triggered outage adds to growing user anxiety around availability and data protection. Its clear and prompt messaging likely helped stem user frustration—and in today’s climate, transparency is as valuable as tech defenses.
