Modo Casino Plans to Stick Around in California, But With Gold Coins Only
As others bail, one of the biggest names finds a loophole.

While nine other sweepstakes casinos have already ditched California ahead of the January 2026 ban, Modo Casino says it’s not going anywhere.
The popular platform just told Sweepsy it will cease all Sweeps Coin gameplay by Dec. 31, 2025, but continue operating its Gold Coin–only model for California players. In short: Modo is going full social.
California Users Just Got the Email
Modo’s message to California players wasn’t a goodbye. It was a heads-up. The platform is prepping behind the scenes to keep gameplay alive—minus the cashout options.
Quote from the player email: “No need to worry about losing access to Modo Casino… we’re already working on updates to ensure we can continue to deliver a fun and rewarding experience for all California players after that date.”
Modo’s Official Statement:
In a statement sent directly to Sweepsy, a Modo Casino spokesperson confirmed that only Gold Coin (freemium) play will remain available after the new law kicks in:
“MODO will fully comply with California’s new legislation and will withdraw all Sweeps Coin activity… MODO will continue to operate its Freemium Play (Gold Coins only) experience in California indefinitely.”
It’s a model already used by bigger brands like Chumba Casino and Global Poker in excluded states—keeping the fun alive without dipping into redemptions or cash prizes.
Gold Coins In, Sweeps Coins Out
Gold Coins can’t be redeemed for real money, which makes them legally safer. It also lets Modo stay visible in a state that reportedly makes up nearly 20% of the total sweeps market.
Compare that with full-platform shutdowns in 15 states where Modo currently doesn’t operate at all, no Sweeps, no Gold, nothing.
Modo Casino is currently unavailable in:
Arizona, Alabama, Connecticut, Delaware, Idaho, Georgia, Hawaii, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Michigan, Mississippi, Montana, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Washington, and West Virginia.
Why Not Just Change the Currency Like ClubWPT?
While some sweepstakes casino platforms are experimenting with new formats—like ClubWPT’s shift to a single “Chips” currency under a poker training label—Modo is sticking with the classic two-track model. But only one track will run in California.
Players can still buy Gold Coins, play for fun, and receive bonuses. But no redemptions, no Sweeps Coins, and no grey-area gambling.
